On November 6, 2024, the Spain’s flag carrier operated the world's first passenger flight with an Airbus A321XLR. Iberia currently mainly operates the long-haul version of the A321neo on routes across the Atlantic. The initial routes from Madrid to Boston, New York and Washington D.C. will be followed by connections to Puerto Rico and Brazil by the end of 2025. This first of initially eight A321XLRs has a rather unusual name – “1927-1939”: Iberia was founded back in 1927, but only started international flights in 1939, following the end of the Spanish Civil War. During these 12 years, it only operated scheduled domestic flights.
